Our next door neighbor has 2 kittens not even a year old who are skinny and always on my porch looking for food. They also both had litters this year and when they neighbors moved in I urged them to get their cats fixed... they didn't and now they are both pregnant again.

They say they don't have the money to get them spayed/kitty abortion, but I offered to pay, and take them in multiple times. when the kitties had the appt. the neighbors were too lazy to awnser the door. The worst part is, they are both sporting new tattoos from over the weekend, one of which would have payed for the abortion.

The SPCA is overfull, they are putting down animals every day.

It took everything I had to not say this when she showed me her new art: "What did you get tattooed on your back? Pictures of dead kitties?"

I just had to walk away.

Recumbents are the only way to go really. This is a totally different ride... no weight on your hands, the steering is smooth and very responsive, and it takes a little something extra to ride, but well worth the new POV.

Donnie just got a new one for his birthday, so maybe after our ride, I will post a picture of it. (his has ape hangers instead of the steering I have)

This is a post that I am going to have to dedicate more time to, so for right now I'm just gonna have to show you my new cart and tell you that since I got it I have yet to go to the store in a car. I can do all my regular shopping with the exception of buying lumber, ect with this cart. Kenyon and I have been to Walgreens, Atwoods, (twice) Subway, Homeland,(several times) K-Mart, the gas station (for sodas not gas) and a million other places that we needed to be. We go to church, meetings, the library and Farmers Market all with pedal power. I figure I have gone a minimum of 60miles in the last week.

Some carrying 40 pounds of cat litter and a case of beer!

The benefits, I have spent nothing on gas and had some extra dough. I heard birds singing, church bells ringing, and seen lots of wildlife. I have met dozens of curious folks and felt much more connected to my community. I also have some really strong legs compared to a few months ago and sleep better.

What's really funny is after I got my cart I read on a "'bent site" that it was just about impossible to ride a short wheel base recumbent with a cart. I didn't know that when I first got it, so I went ahead and did it anyway.

I will admit that stoplights are difficult to start at with everyone watching because it is awkward with clipped pedals... and even worse is starting at the base of a hill with a load. The best part is making it to the top of the hill with a load and knowing if you can do that, you can do alot of things!

It's fuuny, sometimes the cats end up color coded. the other night it was brown cat night all night long. We had Wilma, Iris, and our two brown kitties River and Scraggles. No other colored cat got in bed....

Earlier today 3 versions of white cats were eating out of the same plate at the same time.

Usually when she is asleep Kenyon is covered in these. However, this is Lucy, her favorite... who seems to be wherever Kenyon is at any given moment. This year I let Kenyon do the majority of the mothering of the babies. This means they have imprinted on her this time and they keep HER up all night. She does most of the feeding (she makes a great formula) and has even taken over baths. I am really proud of her. This really is a huge responsibility as this many babies is alot of work (and they cost alot when feeding replacement milk) but to see them thrive and love is a really great thing.

Dillon helped Donnie build a cat house for me the other day. When Donnie finished it he said "There, nothing proves I love you more than a cat house."

While it may not be a new bracelet or a ring he had made for me, I have to agree, any man who does something like this and lets me have this many cats, is a pretty good husband.

We have 3 of these. We call them, The Atchi Brigade because they all 3 look like my beloved Atchi who passed away last year. He was one of the great cat loves of my life. These kitties were wild when first picked up, and we have been teaching them that people are ok. They seem to agree and really purr loud and get a little crazy with the kisses once you get them started. They are also very friendly with the other cats and like to play alot. They are all fixed and have shots....

Everyone in the family spends alot of time helping to socialize the kitties.
This is a really hard job.
We have to sleep with them, snuggle them, talk to them, brush, them... all day and night.
We have to put up with all their kisses, snuggles, and listen and respond appropriately to their kitty talking.
It just wears me out.
I have to wake up in the morning, surrounded by cats... and pet them all before I get up. I have to rub little kittens bellies to make sure they poop and clean their ears.
It is so hard.
I have to hold kitties anytime I sit because there isn't enough time for them all. It never ends. All day long I have to go out of my way to love on cats, and so do my kids and husband.
We all really hate it.

This is the "finished" cat house that we have going on for our SPCA kitties for outdoor relaxation. When it gets a little hotter I will put a mister out there and run it during the hottest parts of the day to keep the kitties cool. They all seem to be very comfortable and have lots of places to hang... I think whats works best is to keep half the adult cats out in it at all times and that really relieves the pressure inside the house, considering we have 5 permanent cats that have egos and anger issues right now. Actually, the one with the biggest problem with it all is one that came to use the last time the shelter flooded and she grew up to be Scraggles, so I really think she should drop the attitude. Mostly everyone gets along pretty well considering...

Several of the kitties came to us with some issues, some are not fully tamed either, so those are some things we are working on with the kitties. All of the kitties enjoy attention once they are in your arms, just a few need a little convincing that this is safe. Some of these kitties have very outstanding personalities, cute quirks, and funny things that they do. If you are at all considering getting a pet, come check these guys out!

Every year the SPCA floods and they have to evauate the animals. When Donnie heard that they were evaucuating, he made a comment to Doug about how when he got home there would be 10 cats at home... and he was wrong. Who is he to think he knows everything?

This is Sarah with the ladies from Tri City TV, who I am going to be doing an environmental segment for one of their shows starting in the next couple weeks. This is funny because Tom Barlow, the publisher of The Current, said a few months ago that he really beleived in what I was doing with the paper, and he thought I would be on TV talking greenspeak within a year. Of course I laughed at him and now look!

Anyway, I had asked the ladies to come and film the farmers market and then I called Sarah to come play it...Because who I thought was going to play cancelled. When they showed up they taped Sarah and then they interviewed her... She was friggin hilarious. They asked her all kinds of questions and she wasn't nervous at all, she belted out her answers and had all kinds of opinions...

It went alot like this.

We are going to take a moment from Sunfest and talk about my mailman. I hate to say it because I love my husband, but we have a friggin HOT mailman! Kenyon and I both think he is cute and every time we see him at the store she says that I am stalking him, but it is her giving out his location and what he is doing the entire time.

Anyway, this picture is from right after the ice cream man incident and Sarah, Jessie and I had a very strange conversation with the mailman that seemed to take a very long time. It was like when the mailman walked up, all three of us were transfixed by him and could not speak. Jesse was wearing a Save Tulsa's Trees shirt and we looked like a band of gypsys I know... Dustin and Donnie standing off to one side still talking about the ice cream man, and of course we were all surrounded by cats.

One more thing about our Supah Dupah mailman, that beatiful hair? He is getting ready to put it into dreads!

The local station 103.9, which happens to be run by some cool folks was doing the broadcasts for Sunfest so Donnie filled some space for them and talked about DPB and The Current. Dillon walked right up to them when they were doing it and acted like he was going to get in on it. I don't think that he realized at first he was on air, I think he originally intened to ask him for money or something. 103.9 is a pretty good station and I really like it because it isn't automated and they use real live people on air.

Bunny butt moved this past week. It was really hard to decide to find her a new home, but she was simply too active to live in our small backyard. We found her a new home with some folks who are taking really good care of her, on 160 acres. They let her in the house, on the couch, and have plenty of space to let her roam. We were sad to see her go, but it seemed to be the best thing for her.

Thad got these shots of one of the many storms we have had to deal with over the last several weeks. We have been under tornado warnings more times this year than I can count. There have been times where several have been on the ground at once and we even have video of the tornado that went right over our house right when it had pulled up and started to disintegrate. That night the tonado sirens went off right when the tornado was almost to our house, it hadn't been raining and was actually partly sunny so we were suprised and walked outside to see what was going on... thats when we saw the tornado coming right at us so we ran to the shelter next door, the tornado was no longer active... but it did run across our roof and totally freaked us out...

Sarah came up and played the Farmers Market for me a couple weeks ago and stayed over. We had alot of fun the night before because we went to see DPB at Snockers. We had to go home early because of the market... but Donnie didn't get to. Being that he is so super-cool he brings PA for the market even when he has gigs the night before. This is why he is sleeping in the truck downtown with a towel on his face. Doesn't he look like an angel?

The market was pretty slow so I did what all good friends do and crashed Sarahs gig. Isn't that a nice thing to do to a friend? I tried to not take the whole show away from her and kept my solo's to a minimum.

Whiskey Bent, Dog Bed Bound

So Randy Crouch spent the night the other night after playing Science. You know the old joke...

Q. How do you know Randy Crouch stayed at your house last night?

A. He's still there!

No, I jest, he isn't still here... and thats a good thing because I might have killed him by now. The whole thing started, well because he came up, but it was also Dougs birthday and Donnie got the wise idea to get him a bottle of honey whiskey that Chuck Dunlap turned him onto. So... of course Doug (who became the Thing about midway into the bottle) came over after the gig and there was some sort of jam that went on. This included alot of playing with the cat with Randy being very into communication on a very spiritual level with Scraggles.... (who fetches)

Also Randy's handler, Mike, was there and he is super cool (who is really into cats too, BTW, he and Grant have 9!). He pretty much chilled and made little noise compared to Randy, who was crawling on the floor with the cat playing fiddle and making up Scraggle songs. (Yes, I had my Zoom out that night too, lol) Doug played guitar, sort of, Donnie played the Bass too loud and I drummed when I wasn't laughing. It was all pretty bad... until I decided to go to bed at about 4. Ok, so I tried. Finally around 5 I had to go out there and tell them all to shut the hell up.

Which thankfully, they did.

The next morning I got up and found Randy asleep not in the hide a bed I expected to see, but on the floor in the dog bed with the cat bed as a pillow, along with a mostly empty bottle of whiskey on it's side and instruments everywhere. I had a long day ahead of me and my kids were going to be home later that afternoon so I made breakfest and sent them out the door by 1. I thought I did pretty good with minimal damage and a fresh Crouch story.

I thought I was just being paranoid the other day about the ice cream man... Until today when he came by and Donnie, Sarah, Dustin and Jessie were all hanging out in the camper with me. Turns out they were super creeped out by him too.. the music is all in minor key and very goth. I took a picture of the kids getting ice cream a few days ago which I think is reasonable and the weirdo took his camera out and took a picture of me.... but not in a "taking friendly pictures of happy customers way".. more of a " I might come back and chop her up later kind of way"

Ok, so I guess I am really old now.. I have 2 kids in high school and one only a few years from going off to college. Of course this totaly does not go with the image of self that I have... That I am perpetually young and not far from high school myself... but maybe by the time I hit 40 I will have figured out that I am not a kid anymore. Maybe.

Anyway, now Thad is headed to high school and he is going in with a big name. A few weeks ago Thad really got everyones attention at school by accidently breaking a HUGE plate glass window at the school by trying to kill a wasp with a textbook...why he thought it needed killing I have no idea, but since no one got injured (including the wasp) I guess it isn't the end of the world. The school called thads dad to ask him to pay for the window ($700) and he told them to call me that I would take care of it. (Very funny, asshole) I told the school to send me half the bill... so far nothing.

At the graduation ceremony they mentioned Thads incident in the "Remember when" section and Thad was very proud to be included.

This is the time I took no pictures because it was 3 in the morning and Donnie had just gotten to the Farm from his Mayfest gigs in Tulsa. I had gone to the camper because there was no campfire action. About 1 minute into our conversation a tour bus pulls up and starts to try to park, being that this is a rural setting there is no tour bus parking out there as many of you know from when other buses have tried unsuccessfully to park at weird hours and all three different jurisdiction cops come out to hassle them.

Anyway, the bus doors open and several guys come hooping and hollering "The Farm! Wake up motherfuckers, we are here... WOOOHOOOO" lol

About 2 minutes later the camper door slams open and in total darkness someone climbs in the bed... it is Steve Littleton who hugs on Donnie, says hi to me and climbs out... Next in is Stoney, who body slams himself into the bed and starts in with a million questions to "Woodhead" He tells him to get out of bed and come to the fire with him and Donnie says " I am not in bed, I'm here talking to my wife, I just got here"

We stayed at the fire until the sun came up. Stoney had the singular purpose of coming all that way to sing some Bob Songs at the campfire and giving him some respect which is what he did. It honestly was one of the more pure moments at the Farm and as much as he rubs me the wrong way sometimes I appreciated the genuine emotion that he expressed.

I don't know how I stayed up all night, all I can say is the energy at The Farm is really something special.

As the afternoon went on it it was time to get some rest for the upcoming night so Donnie and I went to relax in the camper. We left the door open and layed in bed watching everyone, dozing off, listening to the music (while trying to block out the guy who had been playing the same bongo rythmn to EVERY SONG since 9 that morning_ HOLY CRAP, knock that shit off...)

The ultimate in comfort... we lounged in our own bed folks came to visit, sipping their beers and they sat in the door while we layed around and farted.

He was really fun to visit with and ended up hanging with Kenyon and Katie most of the night. Who knows what they talked about, but they seemed to have a really good time. The last time I was in this spot was when everyone got together for the Red Dirt legends photo shoot. I took lots of candids from the photography session which are some of my very favorites. I was unable to wander over there to where bob was sitting and look around now that it has been cleaned up. Every time I looked that it when it hit me really hard that Bob was gone and my throat would get tight and tears started to well up in my eyes. I knew during the shoot that this was going to be a time I looked back on with sadness (and love) and it wasn't long before that came true.

Scraggles loves catnip, every day I catch her going wild in it. I will be the first to admit that I grow catnip every year for the cats and thoughly expect that it gets abused, I have never really had a cat go as wild for it as Scraggles does. As a matter of fact, I had to buy another plant this week because she is never going to let this one grow and it needs some backup.

Walter goes to the Farmers Market

Walter came to the Farmers Market today and really enjoyed himself. He gave everyone kisses whether they wanted them or not and peed on a lot of things that maybe he shouldn't have peed on. (like every pole we passed) Besides that he was a huge hit at the market and everyone gave him bits of their Cinnamon rolls and lots of pats. Persia's Dave was there and he rubbed all over Walter and told him "you feel just like a dog, only smoother" over and over again. I'm not sure I understand, but Walter seemed like he did or that he didn't mind the rubbing that went along with it. After a while Walter decided he was in a state of pure bliss and began to writhe in the grass and snort for quite a while which caused even more attention his way.

Bunny was glad to see him when he got home... Sleeping in bed with the kids made it easier for her to go without her best friend for a few hours though.

Farmers Market

The second farmers market had less produce to sell this week, but that will get better as the season progresses.

This week we had the Tulsa International Folk Dancers come and do the entertainment and they came in traditional folk dance garb and danced the whole time. They brought a May pole and had the folks join in and everyone thought it was lots of fun. Lashawn (I bet I spelled her name wrong) held the May pole up and she flipped me off while she was doing it, so don't think she is as sweet as she looks!

Thad came with me, the other two stayed in bed because they are bad children. Thad dug me up a plant by the railroad tracks that I am particularly fond of and I am glad to say he recognized it and grabbed it for me. Most people think it is a weed, but it is all how you look at things, isn't it?

Beautiful Rain

It is raining the most wonderful steady, full, as well as the gentlest rain it has rained in a long time. The kids are at school and thankfully there are no deadly super cells on the way. All that is left is to enjoy this life giving gift from the sky.

Tell me, can you resist the urge to go out in the rain? I just came in from the most wonderful hour of rain I have had in a long time. I took all the bathroom and kitchen rugs and washed them under the drainspout off the house and hung them out to dry later... I went and pulled weeds, took all my houseplants out to soak it in... and took pictures of the garden.

The rain isn't just for froliking children you know...Even "grown ladies" can play in the rain....

Kenyon took some time out from gardening with her mother to help her little bro try to launch the kite....It was pretty humorous... the little kids across the street were heckling them while watching the show Thad and Kenyon put on. Of course the kids across the street made their own kite too, the only difference was theirs worked. As a matter of fact, they tied it onto something and at dark it was still in the sky WAAAAY over our street taunting our shamed non-kite flying family.

Kenyon and I have been putting in raised beds the last few weeks... We have cucumbers, heirloom tomatoes, onions, zuchinni and peppers planted so far.

Also, the garage has begun the transformation from storage space/work room to studio/living space. (YEAH!)

The kite

Thad was inspired by some neighborhood kids to make his own kite today. When the kids were little they made them quite succesfully out of wal-mart type bags tied to string... tie string to each handle and BAM they were up there. Thad took this as all trash bags make a good kite. Here are the preparations.....

These two lizards are the same age, but not the same size. The lizard in the bowl is in lizard ICU soaking in Pedialite.. and sunbathing.... I am hoping that very soon the antibiotics that I just got for it kick in and it starts to thrive... We are pretty attatched to our little friends... I have been force feeding her for days.. and she is finally starting to look better. Hope to post the permanent outdoor cage pictures by this weekend....

Farmers Market

The first farmers market went really well... it was small, being that it is a bit early IMHO to start a farmers market.... the few things for sale went quickly, as it warms up things will get better. I am currently the "entertainment committee", but I doubt that lasts long.
